Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Saturday expressed gratitude to Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra for her humanitarian intervention in facilitating the transportation of the mortal remains of a Kashmiri shawl seller from Srinagar, who tragically passed away due to a heart attack in Kharagpur, West Bengal.

His grieving family was in urgent need of assistance in transporting his mortal remains to Srinagar for the last rites. However, a local individual was obstructing the process, preventing the deceased’s body from being shifted. His family, particularly his daughters, were in deep distress, anxiously waiting for their father’s last rites to be performed at their ancestral home in Kashmir.

The association took up the matter with West Bengal Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra, requesting her immediate intervention to ensure that the necessary permissions and arrangements were made to facilitate the smooth transportation of the deceased’s mortal remains. The family had reached out for assistance in expediting the process so that the deceased could be laid to rest with dignity.

Association National spokesperson Farhat Riyaz said that upon learning of the tragic incident, National Convenor Nasir Khuehami promptly brought the matter to the attention of MP Mahua Moitra, urging her to intervene. In response, Moitra reached out to her counterpart, the TMC MP from Kharagpur, June Maliah, seeking her assistance in expediting the process. Both leaders acted swiftly, ensuring that the necessary clearances were obtained without delay.

Mahua Moitra informed Khuehami that a local individual was resisting and obstructing the process, causing distress to the deceased’s family. However, after her direct intervention and coordination with local authorities, the issue was promptly resolved.

On Friday evening, following the completion of all necessary medical and legal formalities, the deceased’s body was transported from Kharagpur to Kolkata Airport, accompanied by his relatives. From there, they were flown to Delhi and subsequently to Srinagar, where he was laid to rest at his ancestral home with dignity.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association commended the tireless efforts of the TMC MPs for their support, cooperation, and humanitarian approach in facilitating the repatriation of the deceased’s body. The association also expressed gratitude to the parliamentarians involved in ensuring a swift resolution to the issue.

“We deeply appreciate the prompt action taken by Mahua Moitra Ji and June Maliah Ji. Their intervention brought immense relief to the bereaved family. This case exemplifies how collaboration between different regions, communities, and Members of Parliament can make a real difference in times of crisis,” said Khuehami.

The association expressed hope that such cooperative efforts would continue in the future, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual support. “We aim to maintain this level of coordination and assistance to support Kashmiris, especially students and workers, in any future emergencies,” Khuehami added.
