PRESS RELEASE

The Core Committee of the National Child Development Council held a meeting this week to discuss important safety issues stemming from the recent firework accident in Thrissur, Kerala. The committee had previously expressed condolences over the tragic event and focused this session on identifying preventive measures and policy recommendations to keep the public safe during celebrations.

The committee expressed deep concern about the dangers associated with firework displays, especially given the recent tragedy. This event highlighted the risks of unsafe handling, storage, and use of fireworks. While acknowledging that fireworks are a vital part of cultural and religious celebrations, including Thrissur Pooram, members stressed that public safety must be the top priority.

During the discussion, several key recommendations emerged:

Strict Safety Regulations: All firework displays must follow updated safety standards, including mandatory licensing, risk assessments, and safe distance norms from spectators.

Trained Professionals Only: Fireworks should be handled and launched solely by certified and trained personnel.

Safe Storage Measures: Proper storage facilities with safeguards must be in place to prevent accidental ignition.

Emergency Preparedness: Event organizers must provide safety equipment, deploy medical teams, and create clear evacuation plans.

Regular Inspections: Government authorities should conduct regular inspections and enforce strict penalties for violations.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Educational initiatives should be launched to inform both organizers and the public about risks and responsibilities.

Promotion of Safer Alternatives: The use of low-risk alternatives to high-intensity fireworks was strongly encouraged.

Committee members also pointed out the vulnerability of children, who often face risks due to lack of awareness. They emphasized educating the public about safe practices, such as maintaining distance, avoiding indoor use, purchasing quality materials, and ensuring fire extinguishers are available.

Further concerns were raised about limited access to accident sites, inadequate emergency response infrastructure, overcrowding, and insufficient monitoring by authorities. Members insisted that licensing should only be granted after confirming the availability of key facilities, such as road access, emergency services, and proper safety arrangements.

The committee recommended training programs on using fire safety equipment, strict monitoring of explosive materials, controlled usage of fireworks, and accountability for both organizers and officials. They underscored the importance of crowd management, preventive planning, and coordination with law enforcement agencies.

The NCDC Core Committee urged government bodies, event organizers, and the public to collaborate in making sure that celebrations remain safe and joyful, without jeopardizing lives.
