During the discussion, members pointed out that even with India’s large population, the number of athletes succeeding at national and international levels is still low. Participants stressed that sports should be promoted starting in school and should be more effectively integrated into the education system.

Committee members noted that while some schools support sports activities, long-term support and opportunities often decrease after higher secondary education. They raised concerns about talented students, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds, not getting enough encouragement or resources to pursue sports at higher levels.

The members proposed that governments and educational institutions recognize and support students with athletic talent by providing them opportunities for further development. The discussion also highlighted the need to encourage participation in a wider variety of sports.

Participants pointed out that sports help in the overall development of children by improving physical fitness, confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and teamwork. They emphasized that sports should be seen as a core part of education instead of just a recreational activity.

The committee further discussed the need for qualified physical education teachers to effectively run sports activities and competitions in schools. Members noted that regular participation in sports can help students stay healthy and develop well-rounded personalities.

At the end of the meeting, the committee collectively stressed the need for greater focus on sports within the education system. They called for actions to ensure that sports receive as much importance as academics in schools.
