Srinagar: The National Child Development Council (NCDC) recently held a Core Committee meeting to address the increasing worries about the safety and protection of women and children in India. During the meeting, members emphasized the importance of a special task force recently set up in Tamil Nadu and encouraged governments nationwide to follow suit.

The discussion started with members praising the initiative launched in Tamil Nadu, where a dedicated task force has been created to improve the safety and protection of women and children. This force focuses on quickly responding to distress calls, preventing crimes, supporting victims, monitoring situations, and community policing, all under the guidance of senior police officials.

Committee members pointed out that incidents of domestic violence, child abuse, and crimes against women continue to increase across the country. Recent cases, including one involving the alleged torture of a woman by her husband and another involving the reported assault of a schoolgirl by her father, highlighted the urgent need for better protection systems.

Participants stressed that while emergency helplines and legal provisions already exist, we need immediate response systems and dedicated enforcement units to ensure quick action and justice for victims. Many members noted that the fear of punishment and the presence of a specialized force could serve as a strong deterrent against offenders.

The meeting also underscored the importance of raising awareness among women and children about available support services. Members suggested that each state should create similar task forces equipped with modern technology, dedicated patrol units, mobile apps, toll-free helplines, and emergency response systems to provide timely help.

The committee further recommended improved surveillance in public areas, a broader installation of CCTV cameras, self-defense training for children and women, and stricter enforcement of existing laws. Participants also stressed the need for confidentiality and victim protection when handling complaints.

Several speakers observed that women and children remain among the most vulnerable groups in society. They insisted that governments must prioritize their safety through coordinated efforts involving law enforcement, educational institutions, community organizations, and civil society.

Concluding the discussion, NCDC Core Committee members decided to push for the creation of dedicated Women and Child Protection Task Forces in all states and union territories. The members expressed hope that such initiatives would reduce crimes, boost public confidence, and create a safer environment for women and children throughout the nation.
