The accused, identified as Showkat Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Ahad Bhat and a resident of Urpash, Ganderbal, had reportedly been evading arrest for the past four years. Police said Bhat was involved in multiple offences, including theft, criminal assault, vehicle lifting, and possession of illegal arms.

Records show that the cases against him date back to 2006 and are spread across police stations in Ganderbal, Khanyar, Kangan, Kargil, Sadar Srinagar, Kheerbhawani, Pantha Chowk, and Bari Brahmana (Jammu).

A police spokesperson said the arrest represents a “significant breakthrough” in efforts to tackle repeat offenders and improve public safety in the district.

Authorities have requested that any police station requiring the presence of the accused in other pending cases contact PCR Ganderbal at 0194-2416478, 0194-2416564, 9419371774, or 9906668731.

Police said they remain committed to maintaining order and ensuring accountability through strict action against offenders.
