National Science Day Celebrated at Government Degree College Tral

Tral: Government Degree College Tral celebrated National Science Day on 28th February 2026 with great enthusiasm under the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat.” The programme commenced at 11:00 a.m. in the college mini-auditorium and witnessed the active participation from faculty members, students, and invited dignitaries. The event began with a warm felicitation ceremony, during which the Principal, Prof. Jasvinder Singh, was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers on the dais. The programme was graced by the presence of Dr. Rafiq Ahmad Khan (HoD Physics), Dr. Shabir Hussain Mirza (Staff Secretary), and Dr. Mohd Rafiq Wani (HoD Botany), along with faculty members, non-teaching staff and students from various departments.

The introductory address was delivered by Dr. Mohd Rafiq Wani, who highlighted the significance of National Science Day and the contributions of Nobel Laureate C. V. Raman. He emphasized the growing role of women in science and technology, citing inspiring figures such as Kalpana Chawla, Tessy Thomas, Gagandeep Kang etc. He elaborated on women’s contributions in healthcare, policymaking, entrepreneurship, renewable energy, and emerging technological fields.

The keynote address was presented by Dr. Rafiq Ahmad Khan, who elaborated on the Nobel Prize awarded to C. V. Raman for the discovery of the Raman Effect. He provided a historical overview of Raman’s life and scientific journey, explaining the fundamentals of quantum physics and the phenomenon of light scattering. He highlighted how Raman, initially working in acoustics, made a groundbreaking contribution in optical physics by demonstrating that different colours of light possess different energy levels.

The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. Jasvinder Singh, Principal of the college, who discussed the scientific relevance of the Raman Effect, the dual nature of light, and the principles of quantum physics. He also reflected on the vision of Viksit Bharat, emphasizing that women’s participation in science is a strategic necessity for national development. He noted that women constitute a significant percentage of India’s scientific workforce and acknowledged their notable contributions across various scientific domains.

Following the formal addresses, students from different departments delivered insightful speeches. The speakers included Ms. Irtiqa Shafi (Zoology), Mr. Aneik Hassan Bhat (Chemistry), Mr. Yasir Ahmad Kuchay (EVS), Ms. Gurpreet Kaur (Botany), Ms. Ravinder Pal Kaur (Botany), and Mr. Faisal Najar (Physics). Their presentations reflected enthusiasm, scientific awareness, and an appreciation for the role of science in societal development.

The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants, followed by a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Feroze Ahmad Rafiqui (HoD Chemistry). The programme was moderated by Dr. Shahida Nisar (HoD Agriculture Technology). Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Malla (HoD EVS) and Prof. Waseem Shahri (Department of Botany) served as programme rapporteurs.

The event successfully highlighted the spirit of scientific inquiry and reinforced the importance of empowering women in science as catalysts for India’s progress (Press Release).
