Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ganderbal, Iqbal Dar, speaking to Srinagar Mail, described the situation as alarming, with flames spreading rapidly due to dry vegetation, strong winds, and challenging terrain.

“More than 40 of our staff members, supported by courageous local volunteers, have been working tirelessly to contain the fire. Most of it has been controlled, but efforts are still underway to completely douse the remaining flames,” Dar said. “The difficult landscape and thick undergrowth have made firefighting extremely challenging. However, our teams are leaving no stone unturned to prevent further damage to the forest and its wildlife.”

Eyewitnesses reported towering flames and thick plumes of smoke rising high into the sky, creating a tense atmosphere in nearby areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as firefighting operations continue.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, officials are assessing the extent of the damage. Dar urged the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately to prevent such incidents from escalating.
