Drug abuse, particularly among youth, has become a pressing issue affecting not only individuals but also families and society at large. Prolonged drug use can lead to severe physical health issues such as liver damage, heart problems, and neurological disorders. It also has devastating mental health consequences, including depression, anxiety, paranoia, and in some cases, suicidal tendencies. Socially, drug abuse often leads to broken families, loss of employment, increased crime, and isolation.

Ms. Kimi Padhiar, State level co-ordinating Agency, JKSPYM emphasized that prevention is the most effective approach and should start with strong family support, value-based education, and open communication with children. Schools, colleges, and civil society must work together to build awareness and resilience among the youth. Timely intervention, access to counselling, rehabilitation services, and community support systems are key to helping those already affected by substance abuse.

Mrs. Swati Gupta, Excise and Taxation Officer North Range, Jammu addressed the gathering and highlighted the critical role of law enforcement and civil society in curbing illicit trafficking and ensuring the rehabilitation of affected individuals. He appreciated the Indian Red Cross Society’s efforts in organizing such awareness initiatives and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between departments, NGOs, and the public.

Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Rohit Khajuria, General Secretary, IRCS J&K-UT from the Indian Red Cross Society, J&K emphasized the critical role of community awareness and support systems in tackling the growing menace of substance abuse. The Red Cross continues to be actively engaged in outreach programs and support services aimed at prevention and rehabilitation.

The programme concluded with a collective pledge to say “No to Drugs” and to work towards a drug-free and healthier society. The Indian Red Cross Society continues to lead various awareness campaigns and support services across the UT to address this grave concern.
