Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) under #SeeAMillion Organised ‘Reading Without Seeing’ Workshop in Shopian, J&K

Shopian (Press Release): Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS), in collaboration with EnAble India and the Directorate of School Education, J&K, proudly hosted the “Reading Without Seeing” workshop — a pioneering initiative under the #SeeAMillion campaign — on 4th October, 2025, at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Shopian, J&K.The program was designed to promote educational accessibility and digital empowerment for individuals with visual impairments and low vision.

The workshop introduced participants to assistive tools, technologies, and techniques that enable access to books, articles, and online resources — thereby enhancing their learning, independence, and overall quality of life. Demonstrations on assistive devices, Android applications, computer-based solutions, and inclusive platforms highlighted ways to break barriers in accessing written content and foster inclusion in education and community life.

The event began with an introduction by Mr. Ashaq A. Lone, Project Coordinator VMS, followed by opening remarks from Mr. Ashraf Ravi, Vice Principal, GBHSS Shopian.

• Team VMS conducted a session on assistive devices.

• Mr. Mohammad Haneef introduced participants to various computer applications.

• Ms. Rifat Yasmeen delivered a session on Android applications for accessibility.

• Ms. Iqrah Walli presented an introduction to EnAble India platforms.

The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Masooda Yaseen (Vice-President, VMS), who highlighted the wide range of services offered by VMS for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) across Kashmir and Ladakh. Mr. Ahsan Ul Haq Paul (Special Teacher), Mr. Lateef Ahmad (Special Teacher), and Ms. Nadia Farooq (Special Teacher), whose participation further enriched the workshop.

VMS reiterates its commitment to promoting inclusive education, accessible technology, and equitable opportunities for persons with visual impairments, ensuring that no individual is left behind in their pursuit of knowledge and empowerment.
