Ganderbal, Dec 1 (SM):A court in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has sentenced a Bihar resident to life imprisonment in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, officials said on Monday.
The Principal Sessions Judge, Ganderbal, awarded life imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 to Varinder Thakur, son of Yadav Lal Thakur and a resident of Sariswa, Bihar, under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, they said.
The convict was also sentenced to one year imprisonment and a fine of ₹1,000 under Section 342 IPC, and two years imprisonment and a fine of ₹2,000 under Section 506 IPC, officials added.
The case was prosecuted by PP Shafat Ahmad Bhat, while PP Jehangir Rafiqi argued on behalf of the prosecution during the trial. The investigation was conducted by PSI Rayees Ahmad, whose work was acknowledged as crucial in securing the conviction.
Police said the judgment reflects their continued efforts to ensure stringent action against offenders involved in crimes against children.(SM)
