Srinagar: In a landmark recognition of Kashmir’s rapidly emerging digital creator ecosystem, Google and YouTube have invited acclaimed podcaster, filmmaker, and digital entrepreneur RJ Umar Nisar to attend the prestigious and invite only YouTube Creators Collective, bringing together some of India’s most influential creators, storytellers, and innovators.

Born in a small village in Tral, Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, RJ Umar Nisar’s journey from a young boy with a microphone to becoming one of India’s leading emerging independent podcasters represents a defining story of resilience, innovation, and the democratization of media in the digital age.

At a time when opportunities in mainstream media remained limited and storytelling platforms were largely controlled by traditional gatekeepers, Umar Nisar chose to build an independent voice. Beginning his career as a radio jockey at the age of 12, he embarked on a journey that would eventually help redefine digital storytelling from Jammu and Kashmir.

Through Mashq Records and the Mashq Records Podcast, RJ Umar Nisar has played a pioneering role in transforming podcasting from a relatively unknown medium into a mainstream cultural phenomenon in Jammu and Kashmir and beyond. By creating a platform centered around authentic conversations and independent storytelling, he has helped challenge the monopoly of traditional media while opening new avenues for voices from the region to be heard globally.

Today, Mashq Records Podcast stands among India’s leading emerging independent podcast platforms, with its conversations reaching more than 350 million viewers worldwide across digital platforms. The podcast has featured some of the country’s most influential personalities, including Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament, nationally acclaimed Bollywood filmmakers, artists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, creating a powerful archive of contemporary conversations from India and beyond.

RJ Umar Nisar’s work has earned him multiple prestigious national awards and widespread recognition for his contributions to media, storytelling, youth engagement, and social impact, establishing him as one of the most influential digital creators to emerge from Jammu and Kashmir.

His invitation to the exclusive YouTube Creators Collective marks not only a significant personal milestone, but also a historic moment for Kashmir’s creator community and independent media landscape.

Speaking after attending the event, RJ Umar Nisar said: “Growing up in a small village in Tral, Pulwama, I never imagined that one day I would represent Kashmir at a platform like the YouTube Creators Collective hosted by Google and YouTube. When I started my journey with a microphone at the age of 12, there was no creator economy, no roadmap, and very few people believed that stories from Kashmir could resonate globally. This recognition is not just about me or Mashq Records. It belongs to every young creator from Jammu and Kashmir who dares to dream. Our journey has always been about breaking barriers, challenging the gatekeeping of traditional media, and proving that authentic stories have the power to transcend borders.”

As the global creator economy continues to reshape the future of media, RJ Umar Nisar’s journey from the valleys of Kashmir to one of Google’s most exclusive creator platforms stands as a powerful testament to the rise of independent storytelling.

For a generation of young creators in Jammu and Kashmir, this moment signifies more than recognition.

It is proof that stories from Kashmir not only deserve to be heard, but can also help shape conversations on the world’s biggest platforms.
