Ganderbal, Apr 22(SM): Police have detected and destroyed an illicit poppy cultivation in Thune village of Kangan area in Ganderbal district, officials said on Wednesday.
The action was taken during routine patrolling by police under the jurisdiction of Police Station Kangan.
A patch of land measuring around one-and-a-half marlas was found cultivated with poppy plants, they said.
Preliminary enquiry revealed that the land was in possession of Ghulam Mohammad Najar, a resident of Thune, who had allegedly cultivated the contraband crop.
Accordingly, a case (FIR No. 32/2026) under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Kangan and further investigation is underway.
Police said the drive against drug-related activities will continue and urged the public to share information about illegal cultivation and trafficking.(SM)
