Srinagar, Sept 09: The three-day Annual Athletic Meet, organised by the Directorate of Physical Education & Sports (DPES), University of Kashmir (KU), successfully concluded at the Main Campus. The aim of the event was to provide a platform for students to showcase their athletic talent and prepare them to represent the varsity at All India Inter-University competitions later this year.

The event witnessed participation from over 500 athletes representing 25 colleges, including the postgraduate contingent. Competitions were held in 10 track and field events across both men’s and women’s divisions, comprising 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m relay, discus throw, javelin throw, shot put, and long jump, showcasing a vibrant blend of speed, strength, and endurance.

Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, who presided as the chief guest, while congratulating the winners and participants said, “The University has started awarding academic credits to students participating in sports, NSS, and NCC activities, in line with NEP-2020 and the National Sports Policy 2025. Such measures not only recognise the efforts of student-athletes but also encourage them to pursue excellence in both academics and extracurricular activities.”

Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that such sporting events bring vibrancy to the campus and contribute to nation-building.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Coordinator, DPES KU, Dr. Surjeet Singh, said that the event offered an excellent platform to harness and channelise the energy of the region’s youth in a positive direction.

The meet concluded with a glittering prize distribution ceremony, where medals and certificates were awarded to the winners. The event also received technical support from the Jammu & Kashmir Police Athletics Team.

The proceedings of the medal ceremony were conducted by Football Coach DPES KU, Sajid Yousuf, while as Assistant Director DPES KU, Tausif Bhat, delivered a formal vote of thanks.
