Awantipora, Sept 2: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organised Radio Extravaganza—a vibrant talent hunt and skill-showcase event—in collaboration with Team Radio Chinar 90.4 FM, a community radio station based in Sopore, North Kashmir, on Tuesday, here.

The event aimed at providing students with a platform to showcase their talent besides a first-hand experience of interacting with radio professionals.

The event, designed to showcase the creativity, confidence and communication skills of students, kick-started with a formal welcome address by Head, DJMC, Dr. Rabia Noor. “The event is about discovering hidden voices, nurturing creativity, and empowering students to express themselves through different forms of art. Today, we bring together young and vibrant students, each carrying a unique spark of talent,” she said.

Chief Guest and Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IUST, Dr. Afroz Ahmad Bisati, appreciated the department for organising such events. Stressing that radio is far from dying, he said, “Radio is very much alive, and the proof lies in the fact that it is constantly evolving.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dean Outreach, Dr. Ruheela Hassan said radio remains one of the most powerful media of Mass Communication. “At our university, we have also used this platform to connect with communities and strengthen our outreach. Initiatives like Radio Extravaganza not only celebrate this legacy but also empower students to become impactful communicators and storytellers of the future,” she added.

In his remarks, RJ Sahil Muzaffar, Station Head, Radio Chinar 90.4 FM, highlighted the broader vision of their work. “We have provided a platform to so many individuals to showcase their talent. The motive behind is not just entertainment, but to motivate the youth,” he stressed.

Later, the event was thrown open for a vibrant session- IUST’s Got Talent, which students participated in with passion and much enthusiasm. Participants showcased their talent like poetry, singing, magic show, playing musical instruments, live podcasting and so on. The programme also included interactive sessions, demonstrating students’ flair for creativity and spontaneity on the mic.

Representatives from Radio Chinar 90.4 FM praised the enthusiasm of the participants and encouraged them to pursue opportunities in the rapidly evolving field of radio and podcasting.

The event concluded with RJ Sahil inviting selected students for doing a live programme in the studio to help them gain hands-on experience in live radio production and anchoring.

The proceedings were conducted by Nazakat Aslam and Fahail Mohiuddin, Master’s students of DJMC.

Radio Extravaganza not only celebrated talent but also strengthened the industry-academia collaboration between DIMC and Radio Chinar, ensuring that students get practical exposure alongside academic learning.
